My approach to therapy is relational therapy, often focusing on the dynamics occurring in real time between me and my clients. I believe the therapeutic relationship can provide a corrective experience to past relational wounds and act as a type of “dress rehearsal” for practicing the skills needed to form healthy patterns of relating such as building trust, managing conflict, setting limits, and communicating more authentically outside of the therapy space.
Other frameworks I use in therapy include motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and trauma-informed interventions.

Folks with religious trauma who are in the process of deconstructing and examining their religious beliefs to find what works and what doesn’t, those have walked away from the church to find meaning and community elsewhere, and those who find their faith still important to them yet not sure how to embody that faith authentically
Folks with ADHD who are having difficulty keeping up with the daily demands of life.

Self help involves a person taking initiative through their own behaviors to improve their overall wellbeing. This could look like practicing healthy routines, seeking psychoeducation, etc. and can go a long way improving mental health. Therapy can be a helpful tool to be used alongside self help strategies to increase accountability, problem solve barriers to implementing self help effectively, and develop more self help tools.

Studies have shown the quality of the relationship between therapist and client is the number one predictive driver of healing and recovery.
As a result I am focused on developing a bond of mutual trust and respect, building an environment where a client feel safe to practice vulnerability and authenticity, and creating shared goals to work together towards a client’s recovery.

Bottomline: An AI chatbot, no matter how well trained or safety tested, will able to provide the genuine human-to-human connection that is the number one predictor of positive therapy outcomes.
Furthermore there have been multiple real world examples of risks to consumers when people have utilized a chatbot for mental health treatment including: sycophantic tendencies that have reinforced and individual’s delusional thinking, a lack guardrails around intervening when someone’s safety is at risk, and ongoing concerns around ways AI is collecting consumer data.
Human therapists have strict and enforceable legal and ethical guidelines and licensing boards keeping them accountable to work in the best interests of their clients and ensure their privacy vs AI companies mandates to increase profitability and maximize shareholder wealth.
